One of the first steps I took in cutting the cable cord was to subscribe to Hulu Plus. It was a relatively easy step in the cord cutting process and as a Best Buy Rewards Member, I could get a month free.
This wasn't my first foray into Hulu territory. I had received a beta invitation back in 2007 and used it off and on. At one point I was able to view Hulu on my TV (using Boxee and a hacked Apple TV) but this was eventually blocked. When Hulu Plus came in 2010, I didn't see a need for the service, but then I wasn't trying to ditch my cable.
It's been 3 weeks since getting Hulu Plus and I do have a few issues. There are some shows I watch that are not available on Hulu such as The Walking Dead and Top Chef. Let's not even talk about CBS! You can't watch live TV, so spoilers can be a problem. I have had a few buffering issues, but I think those are related to what else is going with the WiFi network (downloading podcasts and apps through iTunes). And why must I watch commercials when I'm paying for a monthly service? At least they are short ads.
On the upside, my DVR is almost empty and I am not constantly trying to clear it out. I like being able to add past episodes or sometimes entire seasons so I know what episode(s) I need to watch next. I absolutely love the Hulu exclusive series, especially The Booth at the End and Misfits. But one of the most surprising aspects of using Hulu Plus is that it has untethered me from when I watch shows, leaving me with more time for doing other things I enjoy, like writing blog posts!
I will have much more to say about Hulu Plus as I explore more, but right now I must catch the next episode of Misfits!
